We all have some goals in life, but which goals are actually effective? Why should you make sure that your goals are effective and how can you make that happen?

When you set new goals for yourself, it’s crucial that you make them achievable. Goals that are too general and not specific enough are hard to work on and easy to forget about.

That’s why you have to make all of your goals effective. Keep reading to see what that means in practice.

Why it’s important to make your goals effective and achievable?

Achievable goals are clear, specific, and realistic and they have a time frame. This is what makes it possible for you to reach them.

If you have very general goals, such as “I want to be happier” or “I want a better job”, you have literally nothing to work on because you don’t have a clearly defined goal.

For your goal to be effective, it has to be clear as well as reasonable. This way you can make real progress on your goal and you will be able to actually achieve it.

1. Make your goals as clear as possible

First and foremost, you have to know exactly what you are supposed to do. This way you’ll know what kind of action you need to take every day.

You need to know what exactly is your goal. For example, instead of simply wishing you had a better job, you could set a goal such as “I will get a job as a corporate lawyer for a tech firm in San Francisco by the end of the year”. That way you’ll know what you are working for.

2. Set time frames and deadlines

One of the best ways to make your goals effective is to set deadlines and time frames for yourself.

If you don’t set any deadlines, you can technically put off working on your goals forever or keep perfecting them and never quite finish them. In other words, you’re much less likely to actually reach your goals.

That’s why you should always set deadlines and general time frames that will help you to break your goals down.

And don’t be afraid to be ambitious when it comes to your goals. Setting deadlines that feel a bit too tight can help you to surpass yourself and get things done faster.

3. Track your progress

It’s important to always know where you’re at. If you are writing a book and have planned to write one chapter per week, make sure you actually do that.

And if you’re learning a language, test yourself regularly and make sure you’re making real progress.

If you for example use an app to learn vocabulary, but even after several weeks feel like you haven’t memorized almost any of those words well, that’s a sign that you should change your technique.

Always keep track of your progress to make sure you are putting in enough time and effort to reach your goal in time.

4. Break your goals down

Having a clear goal is all well and good, but then what?

If you really want to be that corporate lawyer in San Francisco, you’d better break your goal down so that you know what you should do every day to make your big dream come true.

Now, to get a job you of course need a killer resume and to send applications. But you might also need to brush up on your interview skills, learn to use a certain program, or network.

These are things you need to work on. To break your goals down, you can make a plan on how and when you practice your interview skills, how many applications you have to write per day or per week, and so on.

5. Ask for reasonable progress and effort from yourself

It’s not enough to just do ‘something’ and make some kind of progress. You have to work hard if you have big goals. And to make sure that you will one day reach your goals, you have to make sure that you are making good progress.

This means that you have to prioritize your goals over other things, like some hobbies or free time. You have to make sure that you hit the deadlines you set and that you are taking at least one step forward every day.

If you notice that despite your hard work you haven’t made any significant progress lately, that’s your cue to see what you might be doing wrong and make some changes.

6. Review your work and progress regularly

To make optimal progress, you have to regularly review your work and constantly ask yourself what you could do better. There is a lot to learn and chances are that you are not doing things right from the beginning – and that’s normal.

If you have really big goals, like becoming a published author or building a multi-million dollar business, you for sure have more to learn than you even realize. That means that sometimes you have to be willing to admit to yourself that what you’re doing isn’t working and that you need to make some serious changes if that’s what is needed.

You can for example take some time every Sunday to review your progress that week. That way you’ll notice right away if you could do something differently and take action fast instead of wasting months doing something that doesn’t quite work.

7. Rewards

The biggest reward is reaching your goal, but small rewards will help you get there. Rewarding yourself for little victories and for work well done is a great way to make you enjoy working more and to make you want to keep working even when you don’t feel like it.

It’s important that you don’t reward yourself too much (that would defeat the whole point), but at the same time, you have to feel that it’s possible to get the reward.

You can for example reward yourself with little nice things such as a longer break after working for a couple of hours on something difficult. Or you can come up with some more special rewards, like buying something you’ve been wanting to get after making good progress for a couple of weeks.

Choose something that pushes you to make a greater effort than usual, but that is still appropriate for the work done.

8. Share your goals and progress with a friend

Sharing your goals and the progress you make with a friend makes it more likely for you to achieve them. Try to find someone you can talk about your goals and plans with and then make a pact with them.

If you know that you have to report your progress to your friend every Friday, you’re more likely to force yourself to work even when you feel like doing something else. This will help you immensely.

Talking with a friend about what you’ve been working on all week can also be a good way to get some new ideas and see what you could do better. Remember that feedback is always your friend!

Making your goals effective and easy to act on is extremely important if you are serious about your future. Follow these eight steps to make more progress and reach your goals faster. Remember that nothing is impossible if you work hard and keep learning!
