14 Tips on How to Be More Positive at Work
Sometimes it can be hard to stay positive at work, especially if you have a job that you do not like at all. I’m sure we’ve all been there: waking up in the morning, wishing you could just stay in bed. Forcing yourself to eat breakfast and hurry to work, only to spend all day staring at the clock, wishing you could rush home already.
Or maybe your job isn’t exactly the worst, but it just isn’t right for you anymore. Either way, I’ve got some tips for you to be more positive at work.
Try to implement these tips in your workdays to feel a bit better every day. Sometimes the smallest of changes can have a much bigger effect than expected. And if you truly don’t like your job, search actively to find something else. Just keep trying, and you will succeed.
1. Concentrate on learning new skills
You may not have this job for the rest of your life, but it can still have a lot to offer. While some jobs offer you more new skills than others, you can always try to learn something new even if your job is really easy.
Years back I had a summer job at a cemetery, planting flowers and raking leaves. The job itself wasn’t very interesting or difficult, but I decided to make the most of my time there. After all, if you spend 8 hours a day somewhere, you’d better make it count.
I decided to learn time management and do my best to be efficient. This made me feel like the time spent at work wasn’t simply wasted, but I did get something out of the time I spent there. Try to set yourself some learning goals, like improving your social skills or learning to concentrate better.
2. Make new friends
Having some good friends around will always make your day better. Your colleagues might not be your best friends, but it can still be fun to at least have someone to talk with or to walk to the subway with. Try to strike up conversations with people you don’t really know during your lunch hour or ask if anyone would like to come with you somewhere fun next weekend.
You never know, the people you thought are nothing like you, could become your good friends later on.
Let’s be friends!
3. Try to have a good relationship with your boss
Bosses don’t have a good reputation, but they will always have a big effect on how you feel about your job. I myself have had bosses that immediately made me feel bad when they arrived and also bosses that were fantastic in every aspect.
One thing is always for certain though: the better you treat other people, the better they will treat you (in most cases). Try to do your best at your work and be extra friendly and polite when you talk with your boss. They might just treat you better later on or make sure your contract is continued.
It will also be nicer to ask someone for help or little favors when you are already on good terms with them.
4. Have clear plans on what you want from this job
Remember that this is only one job among many and what is really important, is your future career and your ultimate goals. That’s why you should have a plan for learning some new skills and think in advance about what kind of experiences you want to get.
If possible, try to focus on what skills you want to improve and take on additional responsibilities, if they are available. It’s also important that you don’t let yourself settle for your current job if it’s not your dream job. Keep learning, searching for new opportunities, and applying for new jobs. Remembering that you won’t stay in this job forever will make it easier to stay positive and more relaxed.
5. Invest in your lunches
Lunchtime is your time. That’s why you should spend it well. When I had my first summer jobs, I made the mistake of packing really lousy lunches to save time and money. I don’t recommend that. They will not make you enjoy your breaks and they will probably leave you hungry.
Instead, make sure you have delicious meals packed and make sure to eat enough. Additionally, consider taking a fun book with you or something else that makes your breaks more enjoyable.
6. Spend your lunch hours and time on commute well
If you feel your job is pointless and you’re not learning anything useful, you might feel like your whole day is going to waste. But you don’t have to let that be the case. You can spend your lunch hours studying, writing, or exercising. The commute is also a great opportunity to get things done.
I know the idea of studying or working on your projects during the one lunch hour you have in the middle of a long day is not the most appealing. But I assure you it’s not necessarily that hard once you get used to it and getting the important things done will make you feel better.
7. Listen to podcasts
In many jobs, it’s possible to listen to music while you work. You will definitely have a more positive day at work if you listen to your favorite music. Also what you can do, is listen to podcasts. There are many podcasts that will cheer you up and make you laugh, but you can also listen to something educational or something that motivates you and makes you feel better about your life.
If you want to make your workdays extra useful, listen to educational podcasts (even when you don’t feel like it) or for example podcasts in a different language, to increase your chances to get your dream job later.
8. Be grateful for what you have
This is an obvious one, but having a positive attitude will do wonders. You may not have the best job right now, but you do have a job. This may not be the most fun day, but you are healthy and safe at work. At the end of the day, your colleagues aren’t that bad. And after a long day at work, you get to go home and do whatever you please.
Try to look at the positive sides of your job and your days will be that much better.
9. Spend your evenings on your side hustle or job applications
One way to feel more positive about your work is to make sure the rest of your day will have a lot of value. If you have a side hustle, work on it every evening. It might just be your ticket to a better future later on. It is also a good idea to start a side hustle if you haven’t already. At the very least you can make some extra money. If your primary goal is to find a better job, write applications, practice your interview skills, and polish your LinkedIn profile every night.
I know it’s tiresome, frustrating, and sometimes even scary, when you feel like you will never find a better job. But if you just keep trying, you are bound to find something sooner or later. And knowing that you are working on finding another job will make you feel better during your time at work.

10. Bring snacks
If you work in an office, one great way to make your days more bearable and make you feel more positive is to bring snacks to work. And when I say snacks, I mean good snacks. If you like chili nuts or Oreos, why not bring those to work sometimes?
Of course, healthy options are terrific too. You can make nut or seed mixes, or bring a fresh smoothie with you. They are guaranteed to make you feel much better at work.
11. Sleep and eat well
This may sound obvious, but it makes all the difference. When you sleep and eat well, you will feel much more positive and enjoy your life more. Some people feel they are too busy to sleep enough or they think that you can get used to sleeping less. But the truth is, you need sleep. Even 20 minutes less than what your body needs, will make you less happy and less efficient for the whole day.
Do yourself a favor and make sure you go to bed early enough and then eat a good breakfast before going to work. It will make your workdays much easier.
12. Remember that you don’t have to be perfect
If you find your job difficult and the expectations set for you are high, it’s easy to start feeling stressed and worry about your future at the company. But even if your work is difficult, you have to remember that you don’t have to be perfect. If it is hard for you, it’s hard for others too. Do your best to learn more, but don’t be a perfectionist.
And remember that others maybe aren’t as good as they seem to be. Some bad bosses constantly pressure people to be better and better and expect impossible results. But in this case, there’s probably no one who is up to their standards. This is why you shouldn’t be stressed about it and instead just do your best.
13. Dare to take risks
Sometimes the best way to approach problems is to stop taking things too seriously. There are many things that are constantly monitored at my company, like speed and accuracy. There’s constant talk about our performance and some people are seriously stressed out by it.
What I have chosen to do instead, is to trust my talent and just work without thinking too much. I make fast decisions and don’t sweat mistakes. If this strategy doesn’t work, I’ll adjust it. But until my boss complains, why should I worry? It is often the risks we take in life that move us forward.
14. Remember that you won’t stay there forever
If you spend the whole time at work wishing you weren’t there, one important thing to remember is that you won’t have the same job forever. Almost everyone has had at least a couple of jobs that they couldn’t stand or where they simply did not get along with their colleagues. Consider this job as one experience among many.
Better times will come and they will come faster if you actively apply for other jobs. If you quite like your job, but you’re still having a hard time staying positive, consider reducing your hours, if possible. It can make all the difference in your day.
