26 Life Goals You Need to Set for Yourself Today
You’re ambitious and want to change your life for the better, but sometimes it’s hard to know what exactly you should set your eyes on and what goals it makes sense to work on. Setting life goals helps you figure out what you really want from life and what you should prioritize above other things.
Additionally, life goals can help you change your life and yourself in a way that will make your life much more enjoyable and rewarding. That’s why you should definitely take these goals seriously!
But what goals should you set in life? What goals would make the biggest difference? Keep reading to find the best life goals for you!
What are life goals?
Life goals are the biggest goals that you want to achieve in your life. They often take a lot of time to accomplish and they tend to make a big impact on your life.
For some, their life goal might be to become a CEO of a big company or be able to retire young. These are obviously big goals that take a lot of work to accomplish.
Life goals don’t necessarily have to be very difficult to achieve though. Whatever your most important goals are, they count.
What life goals should you set?
It would be nice to do everything in life, but unfortunately, that’s hardly possible. That’s why you want to take some time to think about what you really want to achieve in life. What are the most important goals for you? What would make the biggest difference to you?
Traveling around the world sounds grand, but if you are not someone who particularly enjoys traveling, then this is probably not something you need on your list. You should focus on what truly matters to you and do everything you can to make that happen.
It’s best to choose a modest number of life goals so that you are able to make them happen. I suggest you choose a maximum of five life goals. If (and when) you achieve them all, you can pick some new ones.
Best life goals to set
If you need some inspiration, here are some life goal ideas that will help you change your life for the better and make you a more well-rounded person.
Remember that it is very hard to have a lot of goals to work on at the same time. Pick a couple of the most important ones to tackle first and once you are doing well with them, you can take on some new goals.
It’s still always good to have an idea of what are all the goals that you want to achieve at some point in your life. That’s why you can freely write a list of all the life goals you want to achieve, even if you can’t work on them all at the same time.
Here are my best life goal ideas:
1. Become an optimist
Being an optimist makes a huge difference. Instead of constantly thinking about what could go wrong or telling yourself that it’s not even worth trying, you can start believing in your chances and your ability to make things work.
Often when I’m stressed about something I just tell myself that it’s probably going to work out (and it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t) and guess what – I’m practically always right. Start asking yourself what if it will work out instead of what if it won’t work out.
2. Learn self-control
Self-control is one of the most important skills to have if you want to make your big dreams come true. It has many benefits, such as a greater chance of succeeding in your endeavors, being able to overcome temptation, and making better decisions.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that you either have self-control or you don’t. It is something you can develop over time. The more self-control you have, the easier it is to go after your goals. You can develop it by coming up with simple exercises that force you to wait for gratification.
3. Stop caring about what other people think
If you don’t do things that you would like to do just because you think other people wouldn’t approve of them, you’re missing out.
First of all, most people don’t care about what other people do all that much. And secondly, even if you’re family members have strong opinions about what you should and shouldn’t do, you still have every right to live your life the way you want.
You need to stop wondering what other people might think about you and let their opinions go in one ear and out the other when you know that you are doing what is right for you.
4. Develop a growth mindset
Mindset is everything when it comes to growth and success. If you tell yourself that you are what you are and some things simply are out of your league, you’re sabotaging your own life. The good news is that mindset is one of the many things that can be changed.
Having a growth mindset will help you to improve your skills and believe in your ability to learn and become better. By embracing a growth mindset, you won’t get as easily discouraged by all the obstacles you encounter because you know you always have a chance to get better.

5. Become confident
This is easier said than done for sure. But you should never think that you simply aren’t a confident person and that’s all there is to it.
Set a goal of becoming more confident and I guarantee you, your life will start to get much easier (and more fun when you can finally be yourself). The more confident you are, the less time you’ll have to spend worrying about what other people think about you or do you have what it takes to reach your goals.
6. Retire early
This is a great goal for anyone who has been dreaming of total freedom and an empty schedule. You might have heard about the FIRE movement and in case that is something you are interested in, I say go for it!
If on the other hand you are not in a hurry to retire and you simply dream of retiring for instance ten years early, you don’t need to work quite as hard right now. Making a plan to retire early and starting to invest your money is still a good idea.
7. Become fluent in a foreign language
I have heard a lot of people saying they want to learn Spanish or French or Swahili, but few people actually take action and start studying. Even fewer stick to their goal after they’ve started studying!
Being fluent in a foreign language is not only a joy, it can have a massive impact on your career and help you relocate if you if that’s what you want.
And you don’t need to be worried about having to spend thousands of hours studying to see any difference – after a few weeks of studying you can already start reaping the benefits. Maybe you can have simple conversations on your holidays or you’re able to read some simple books in your target language.
8. Take a risk you have been too scared to take
Have you been dreaming of leaving your job and backpacking through Asia? Or do you want to have a complete makeover?
Whatever your dream is, taking risks often pays off. If you have been dreaming of something for a long time, it’s a sign you should just do it. Taking stupid risks doesn’t make sense, but trying to improve your life is not stupid. Dare to take chances and your life can become much better in a matter of weeks.
9. Start your own business
Do you want to create something of your own and be your own boss? Then you might want to start your own business. Depending on the type of business you are thinking about, this could give you the freedom you’ve been craving and a possibility to scale your income in a way that just isn’t possible in a normal salary job.
If you don’t want to quit your job and put all the eggs in the same basket, you can start a small business on the side and see where it goes.
10.Travel the world
Do you dream of traveling around the world without caring about tomorrow? Don’t let that dream die. You only have one life and if you want to travel, you should do it.
You could for example take a year or two off and go wherever you want. You can save up some money for this or see how you could make money on the way. There are also many options to get food and accommodation in exchange for some simple work. Check out Workaway and Worldpackers.

11. Let go of your insecurities
No one is perfect and there is literally no need to be perfect. Yet most people have many insecurities about their skills, looks, or personal traits. While this is very human, it can make you feel very bad about yourself, which in turn can hold you back.
Work on overcoming your insecurities and focusing on your strengths. Chances are that other people don’t even notice the physical features you feel super insecure about or think that you are awkward or incompetent even if you feel like it.
12. Become fit and healthy
Almost everyone thinks they should eat healthily and exercise more, but not everyone bothers to put in the effort. You already know that eating right and exercising does wonders for your body and your mind, so why not start taking these things seriously?
The more you do it, the easier it becomes. Once you start eating good, healthy food, you’ll notice that you feel much better and have more energy. Who would want to give that up?
13. Get your dream job
Do you have a specific dream job that you have been fantasizing about for years? It might feel like it’s way out of your reach, but if you set your eyes on that job and work smart, that job might be within your reach sooner than you thought.
Remember that people who are chosen for certain positions aren’t necessarily perfect candidates – they are simply good enough and they have the courage to go and try even if they don’t have it all figured out yet. Don’t think you need to be perfect, just get the skills and experience you think will help you and then apply even if you don’t meet all the requirements.
14. Start waking up early
The early bird catches the worm and that is especially true if you have big plans and a lot to do. Start getting up an hour or two earlier and you will notice that it’s much easier to get things done early in the morning when other people are still sleeping and you can focus on your work.
Make sure to start making the change slowly. If you force yourself to get up much earlier than before, you’ll just be really tired and can’t get much done all day.
15. Become more perseverant
Perseverance is a great trait to have because it helps you work through the thick and thin and keep going even if things get hard or when you really don’t feel like doing anything.
Just like many other traits, perseverance is something you can learn and improve. Just because you have a tendency to give up too easily now doesn’t mean that it has to be like that forever. Start developing your perseverance and you can increase your chances of success tremendously.
16. Learn a skill you’ve always wanted to learn
I bet there are plenty of things you’ve always wanted to learn. Maybe you wish you could ride a horse or play the ukulele? Or do you want to learn how to scuba dive?
Life is more fun with more skills and that’s why you should set a goal for yourself to learn at least one skill that you have always wanted to learn. It might only take a few months to learn the skill and at the very least you’ll get better all the time.

17. Let your past go
Are you still carrying the weight of your past? Maybe some bad things happened in your childhood or you faced some rough times as an adult. Whatever it is, it’s natural that it still affects you.
However, you are not your past and you should work to let go of all the bad memories and experiences that you still let take space in your head. Simply talking to yourself about your past or writing about it in your journal can help a lot. If necessary, get a therapist, but don’t let your past define your whole life.

18. Become brave
Bravery is not only about doing dangerous things. It’s about taking action and speaking up even when you feel scared or like you can’t do it. It’s about accepting your fear and making the decision to do it anyway.
When you’re brave, you can make big changes in your life and take chances even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed. You can start becoming braver by setting little challenges for yourself and not letting your fears dictate your actions.
19. Only accept good relationships in your life
The people around you make all the difference. If your friends don’t treat you well or they for example have a very negative mindset, you’d definitely be better off by finding some new friends.
You don’t need to accept everyone in your life and sometimes it might be better to be alone than to be around people who don’t make you feel good. Start accepting only good relationships in your life and you will be much happier.
20. Write a book
Perfectly normal people write books every day. You really don’t need to be Hemingway or Shakespeare to write a book or even to get it published.
If you love writing and want to write a book, start working on it, and don’t get discouraged when your first draft isn’t perfect. Writing a book requires a lot of editing and every step takes you closer to the finish line. If you don’t want to approach big publishers, you can always self-publish your book for example on Amazon.
21. Accept yourself exactly the way you are
Accepting yourself exactly the way you are isn’t necessarily an easy task, but you deserve to feel good about yourself. Try to look for new good qualities in yourself that you haven’t given a thought to before and focus on your strengths.
Remind yourself of the fact that everyone has some weaknesses and some qualities they’d like to change. You’re good the way you are and all the things you learn and all the ways in which you develop just make you more perfect.
22. Move abroad
Many people dream of moving to Paris or Italy, but unfortunately most people never actually take the step and do it. While moving to a new country (especially alone) can sound scary or even crazy, I assure you it’s not as hard as it seems and it’s much more rewarding than you might think.
There’s no need to move abroad forever if you do like your home country. You could decide to live somewhere else for a year or maybe five and then simply come back home with a thousand experiences richer.
23. Start a social media channel
Does starting a Youtube channel sound like fun? Do you wish you had 100 000 followers on Instagram? If yes, why not get started?
Whatever type of content you are planning on creating, it will for sure take a lot of effort and the learning curve might be steep. But don’t be discouraged. If this is something you have always wanted to do, get started today. You never know how far you can go if you don’t even try.
24. Become a millionaire
An ambitious goal, but not necessarily as far-fetched as you might think. With a good plan and hard work, you could become much richer than you could ever even have imagined. This would enable you to choose your own lifestyle and not have to worry about running out of money.
Smart investing can pay off over time, but you might also want to look into starting your own business. That gives you the best chances of scaling your income.
25. Climb a mountain
It’s good to have some goals that have nothing to do with your career or daily life. Getting experiences that are completely out of the ordinary makes you feel truly alive and overcoming physical challenges gives you a massive boost of self-confidence.
That’s why climbing a mountain is a great goal to have in life. It’s specific, it’s exciting, and exerting yourself all the way to the top will teach you perseverance and make you believe in yourself. And you don’t have to climb Mt. Everest – there are plenty of mountains in the world that even beginners can climb.
26. Become kinder
Kindness is one of the best qualities a person can have. And it’s safe to say that a little more kindness in this world wouldn’t hurt.
Try to become a more kind and caring person by paying extra attention to how your words and actions affect other people. Maybe you can help someone in need or simply donate more money to charity?
