Everyone knows that life isn’t supposed to be fun and easy all the time. But how to know if your current life simply isn’t for you? How to know when enough is enough?
If you have been thinking about changing your life in any way, whether it’s about quitting your job, moving elsewhere, ending a relationship, or leaving your old self behind, you’re in a situation where you aren’t really happy, but you might not be sure if you want to leave either.
It’s perfectly normal to feel like you shouldn’t leave a perfectly fine job or relationship even though you can’t help but wonder if there is something better for you out there. Big choices aren’t easy to make and there isn’t necessarily only one right answer.
But I’ll tell you one thing. You deserve to be happy and things can change for the better really fast if you just dare to take action.
How do you know when enough is enough?
It can be very hard to know what action you should take or what you really even want to do in your life. That is totally normal. But you need to find the right answer so that you can be truly happy one day.
To figure out whether it’s time to say enough is enough or whether you should still keep trying, ask yourself if the following statements apply to you.
1. You are constantly wondering if you should just leave
Are you often wondering whether you should just quit? That maybe it’s not worth even trying to make things work in your current situation?
People who are happy where they are don’t constantly think about what else life has to offer or is this enough. If you feel like life might be much better if you just dared to take the plunge, chances are that’s what you should do.
2. You secretly dream about a completely different life
Do you dream about a completely different life? Do you often find yourself thinking about living in a certain country, finding new friends, or having a completely different career?
Whatever your dreams are, they are valid and you shouldn’t ignore them. If you simply want more responsibility at work, you might be able to achieve that without quitting your job. But if you currently work as an accountant and you have dreams of becoming a lawyer, then you need to quit your job and apply to law school.

3. You feel like you are not yourself
Do you feel like you are bubbly and outgoing on the inside, but you are acting totally different? Or that you are supposed to be confident and adventurous, but for the past years you have been passive and reticent?
Living the wrong life can make you forget who you really are. But if you feel like you are not quite yourself or that you are playing a role instead of being the real you, something needs to change.
4. You don’t feel like even trying
Have you worked on something for years, only to find out it wasn’t meant to be? That’s crushing and you might think there’s no point even trying to change your life and making things work anymore. But that’s not true. You still have a chance to be happy and you should keep trying.
Either you have to keep trying in your current job or relationship or whatever else you are not quite sure about, or you have to find something else to go after.
5. You are lying to your friends and family
Do you catch yourself telling little lies to your friends and family about how everything is well and good, although in reality things are far from perfect and you feel like it would be embarrassing if people knew how things really are?
If you need to hide your life and your true feelings from those closest to you, that’s a sign you need to be honest with them and yourself and change your life.
6. You haven’t really been happy in a long time
The most important thing to ask yourself is are you really happy. Do you feel like everything is good and you are free to grow in your current situation? Or do you feel like you can’t be happy unless there are going to be some big changes?
You might have heard that happiness comes from within and it is true to a certain extent. But at the same time, you can’t be truly happy if you’re not where you want to be, doing what you want, and with the people with whom you can be yourself.

If you know that you have had enough, it’s time to take action. Don’t hold on to your mediocre way of living for the sake of comfort or good memories. You need to go after the life you really want to live. A lot can change in only a few months’ time if you are willing to let go of the past and see what else life has to offer to you.
To move on, do these four things:
1. Ask yourself what are your biggest dreams
First of all, you need to know what you really want your life to be like. What are your biggest dreams? What would your ideal day be like? What do you want to do, where and with who?
Can you reach your dreams in your current situation or do you need to let something go? For example, the job you have now might help you build a safety net for later, but it might also hold you back if you want to do something completely different.
2. Be honest with yourself
It’s not easy to know when enough is enough and what exactly you should do to change things for the better. But be honest with yourself and don’t hide your true feelings from yourself.
What are all the things you want to change? What doesn’t serve you anymore? What do you really want from life? Do you already know what you want to do, but you are afraid to say it out loud?
Have the courage to be true to yourself and don’t waste time second-guessing.
3. Make a plan
Once you have an idea of what you want to do with your life, you need to make a plan. The more detailed it is, the better. You need to know whether you can leave your current situation immediately or do you need to make some preparations first, such as saving up money.
Make sure your plan is actionable and start working on it right away.
4. Start taking small steps
If you can and you have the courage to do it, you can quit right away, pack your bags and start a new life in a new city (or whatever your dream might be).
But in case you can’t or don’t want to change everything at once, simply start taking small steps every day towards your next chapter in life. The important thing is that you keep going.
Leaving one chapter in your life behind isn’t going to be easy, but it is necessary for you to be happy. And you deserve happiness.
