It’s that time of the year again! Christmas seems to be everywhere already in November and at least the Instagram influencers I’m following seem to be preparing for the holiday season already. But even if you haven’t started your Christmas shopping already on Black Friday, you can always start getting ready for the month of December by setting some December goals!
It’s always a perfect time to set some new monthly goals if you ask me and it’s fun to come up with goals that fit the specific month. November goals focused on productivity and December goals are all about making this last month of the year both wonderful and useful – you should definitely take enough time for yourself to just relax and unwind, but you also want to get ready for the next year.
Without further ado, let’s start getting ready for the new month. Here are some of the best ideas for December goals!
1. Read biographies and memoirs
December is a great month for reading. Especially during the Christmas break, it’s so nice to spend some quality time bundling up on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa and reading a good book.
If you’re not sure what to read, why not try a biography or a memoir for a change? I love reading them, I feel you can always learn so much about life when you’re reading a good biography. And there are many good ones to choose from!
If someone you find interesting has written a book, you should definitely read it. And in case you haven’t read Michelle Obama’s memoir yet, you definitely should!
2. Find new podcasts to listen
Do you feel like you need something new to listen to? In that case, why not set a December goal to sample some podcasts you haven’t listened to yet?
Listening to a good podcast makes boring tasks and your daily commute much more enjoyable. I have a list of motivational podcasts that I like, take a look at them if you need something new to listen to.
3. Start to new habits
Setting goals is paramount to success and building a better future. Having daily habits that help you work on your goals and live an overall better life can help you a lot.
Why not set a December goal of starting a couple of new, useful habits, that will help you reach your dreams? If you want ideas on what habits to build, you can find some here. There you can also find a cute habit tracker template if you sign up for my newsletter!

4. Declutter your phone
I feel like we all have way too many apps, files, and useless photos on our phones. In case simply looking at the home screen of your phone gives you stress and you sometimes have a hard time finding the app you need, it’s definitely time to declutter your phone.
Delete the apps, Whatsapp conversations, notes, and screenshots you no longer need. The fewer apps you have, the easier it is to not waste time on your phone. Do you really need to have Facebook on your phone? Or that photo editing app you haven’t even opened in months?
Do yourself a favor and get rid of everything you don’t need. I promise you it will be liberating.
5. Review the past year
Before the start of the new year and new challenges, take some time to review the past year. Ask yourself what went well and what you should have done differently.
Are there any goals you didn’t achieve? Why is that? What would have helped you make this year better or more beneficial in terms of your future plans? Did you always leave things till the last minute? Were your to-do lists too long or not detailed enough?
It’s a good idea to write down your thoughts for future reference so that you don’t repeat the same mistakes next year.
6. Set new yearly goals
You don’t need to plan your whole year yet, but you can still start thinking about the goals you want to set for the next year. If you want to set yearly goals, you might want to get a simple yearly habit tracker that will help you stay on track and make sure you don’t give up already in January.
You should always break your long-term goals into smaller, more actionable steps so that you know what you should work on and when. If you want to learn a new skill next year, think about what you should do each month and set targets for yourself. Make sure you don’t just fall back to your usual routine – you have big dreams and goals to reach!

7. Prepare for the next year
Setting goals is important, but there are many different ways in which you can prepare for the next year. What are all the things you want to do in the coming year?
Write some goal lists, draft a bucket list for all the fun things you want to do, and get a new planner that will help you become more organized than last year. If you want to reach your full potential, you really have to plan how you spend your time.
8. Start a new Instagram account
That’s what I just did! If you only have a personal Instagram account, starting a new, more ambitious account can be a fun December goal.
Building a popular Instagram account is quite a challenge, but you can learn a lot about social media and content creation if you do it. It’s also very possible to make money on Instagram – you just have to work hard on your account for a few months.
And don’t get discouraged if you don’t see much traction at first. It definitely takes time and effort to learn what works.
9. Do something nice for others
Christmas is the time to relax and simply enjoy yourself, but it’s also the time to think about others. Make it a December goal to do something nice for others in some way.
You can for example volunteer for a local charity or send Christmas cards to people you don’t see often. There are a lot of NGOs that are doing something special for people in need this time of year. Perhaps you’d like to buy a Christmas present for a child whose family is struggling financially?
10. Start reading poems
Do you read poems? If not, why not give it a try? Poems can be funny and they can be moving, but you can only find the right poems for you if you take the time to search for them.
To get in the habit of reading more poems, I recommend the poetry collections by Allie Esiri. There’s for example A Poem for Every Winter Day and A Poem for Every Day of the Year. One very popular collection you can also check out is Poetry Pharmacy by William Sieghart.
11. Create a new self-care routine
I do think that it’s important to aim to be productive and efficient if you have big goals in life. But it’s also important to have balance. You can’t work all the time and you need to take care of yourself and your wellbeing.
That’s why you should start a new self-care routine. It doesn’t have to be complicated and you don’t need to do it every day. Just list some things that help you destress and make you feel better. I have some ideas for a relaxing self-care weekend to help you get started.
12. Find new favorite TV shows to watch
December is the best month of the year to watch some TV. It’s cold and dark outside and you probably have some extra time around Christmas to spend however you like.
Now is the perfect time to try to find some new TV shows to watch. You can for example try some new series in a genre that you never watch. I just finished watching Better Call Saul, which is definitely not something I’d normally watch. But I really enjoyed it!
Conclusion
Goal setting is always a good idea, especially for the very last month of the year. You might still have some goals you have set for this year that you need to work on. The end of the year creeping nearer can be a wonderful motivator.
Although that’s nothing compared to the whole new year that is just around the corner! Just imagine all the things that you can do next year and all the new adventures and surprises waiting for you!
My Christmas goal is to simply relax and take a little break from work, but I still want to make this month count. That’s why I have set some December goals to make sure that I can end this year feeling good.
