Are you planning on making some New Year’s resolutions this year? You might be wondering whether it really is a good idea or not to make any, or how you can stick to your goals and not fall back to your old habits before the second week of January. Or maybe you already know that you want to make a change in the coming year, but you’re simply not sure what resolutions to make! That is exactly why I have prepared a list of some great New Year’s resolution ideas for you.

I will also tell you why exactly you definitely should make resolutions, how many you should make and how they can change your life (if you do it right)! Keep reading to make sure you won’t break your resolutions this time!

What is a New Year’s resolution?

A New Year’s resolution is a promise you make to yourself at New Year’s. It can be anything: learning a new skill, quitting something, starting a new hobby or a habit, or for example running a marathon – whatever floats your boat!

Usually people want to make resolutions that would be good for them, such as quitting smoking or starting to eat healthier. Some people simply want to make life a bit more fun by coming up with something crazy, like visiting every state by the end of the year or learning to play the ukulele.

A good resolution for you is something that fits your goals, is achievable, and is something you truly want to do.

Why you should make resolutions?

I’m sure you have heard of most people failing their New Year’s resolutions (possibly already in January). That doesn’t mean that making resolutions would be pointless though. You simply have to make sure that you’re making smart resolutions and you are serious about them.

New Year’s resolutions can help you reach your biggest goals and make the changes in your life that you’ve been wanting to make for years. That’s why you should take advantage of the new beginning and make it count.

“New year, new you” can be true if you set your mind to it and do your best to actually make the necessary changes in your life. It’s safe to say that big changes are never easy. But they are always worth it in the end. 2022 is the perfect chance to decide to go all in and see how far you can get this year.

The special benefit of New Year’s resolutions is that they have a specific time frame. Goals with exact time frames are easier to achieve, because they are clearer and they have a deadline.

Whatever your goals are, New Year’s resolutions are great if you want to turn a new leaf or you simply want to try something new and fun.

Good New Year’s resolution ideas for 2022

Let’s get to the main point. I have quite a few great ideas for your resolutions! Whether you want to be more productive or learn new skills, I’ve got you covered. Here are my 20 best ideas for your resolutions:

1. Stop procrastinating

Procrastination is a huge problem for many. This is something you definitely want to stop doing, especially if you want to get a lot done or have a lot going on.

2. Learn a new language

Everyone wants to learn a new language, right? It’s definitely always a good idea. Did you know that it can actually help you with your career

3. Start drinking more water

A lot of people are dehydrated and we know that’s not good for anyone. Start drinking an extra bottle of water (or even two) per day to make sure you’re not one of those people.

4. Start waking up early

I guarantee you, this will change your life. The early hours of the day are the best for when you need to focus and don’t want to be distracted. Whether you want to start getting up at 5 am or maybe 6 am, that’s up to you.

5. Start a side hustle

Do you maybe want to be self-employed one day or simply make some extra money? I suggest you start a new side hustle! It can increase your income and teach you new, marketable skills.

6. Buy only what you need

Consumerism is no longer cool and we know it. Promise yourself you will only buy what you need.

7. Start investing

More and more people are getting interested in investing and that is great. The earlier you start, the more money you have time to make. If you want more financial security, you have to start investing. Get a couple of books about investing and subscribe to a podcast to get started.

8. Start a new skincare routine

One part of leveling up is to feel good in your skin. And what better way to make that happen, but to start a skincare routine that will both make your skin look amazing and feel great too?

9. Create a productive morning routine

If you want to be productive, you have to start the moment you get up in the morning. With a good, productive morning routine, you can start your day right and feel energetic till the evening.

10. Spend more time with your family

Sometimes we are too busy to notice that we haven’t seen our loved ones in a while or even called them. How about you start making more time for your family? You could for example start calling your grandmother every Sunday.

11. Get plants

If you are looking for a more fun resolution to make, how about getting some plants? They can really liven up your house and it’s nice to take care of something. Maybe a few months later you will be one of those crazy plant ladies whose house starts to represent a forest?

Don’t worry though, you don’t have to take it that far.

12. Make a new friend

Whether you need more company or you want to network to advance your career, making new friends is always a great idea.

13. Start volunteering

Volunteer work is both a great way to give back and learn some new skills. It can also advance your career

14. Build your confidence

We all want to be more confident, right? Well, it’s something you can practice. If you want to become more confident, simply start training yourself

15. Watch less TV

Do you watch five different shows every day and have a habit of finishing a new series you find in one weekend? You might want to spend your time doing something more productive or meaningful. Start limiting your TV or Netflix time to 1 or 2 hours per day.

16. Get a new job or a promotion

This isn’t the easiest goal to accomplish, but with the right attitude and a solid plan, you can make anything happen. If you want a new job, you have to go after it and send those applications.

17. Read a certain number of books

Reading books is always beneficial. You may want to opt for fiction, but what about picking a couple of self-help books as well?

18. Go to sleep in time

The biggest reason why people are tired and don’t like mornings, is that they stay up too late. I know it’s not fun to go to bed when you finally have some time to watch Netflix, but you will thank yourself in the morning when you feel refreshed and ready to tackle the day.

19. Start saying an affirmation every morning

Affirmations can have a huge impact on your life. They can for example help you become more confident or to work hard. And they don’t take much time!

20. Write morning pages

Morning pages are a wonderful way to start your day. A lot of writers and artists write these, but they are good for anyone who wants to clear their head or simply likes to write.

How many New Year’s resolutions should you make?

One question you may ask is how many resolutions you should make. Is only one resolution too little and how many are too many?

To figure out how many resolutions it makes sense for you make, you first of all have to be clear about your goals. What do you want to achieve in your life? Is there something you’ve been wanting to do for years? Do you think you should try to eat vegan just because other people are telling you to?

You may have a lot of ideas in your head. But to make it possible for you to achieve your resolutions, you have to prioritize the most important goals you have. It doesn’t make sense to try to change every single thing in one year – that’s hardly possible!

Instead, you want to make the number of resolutions you think you can actually stick to in your daily life.

Making even only one resolution is good, if you think that that’s the right number for you. I myself would suggest max. 3 resolutions, as this ensures that you won’t be overwhelmed or forget some of your resolutions.

Don’t forget that you can always start new goals throughout the year if you feel like you have enough time and energy for something else.

The power of New Year’s resolutions

Are you wondering if making resolutions will make much of a difference after all? I know that it can sometimes seem like it doesn’t, but that’s not the case at all when you commit to your goals!

If you take the resolutions you make seriously, prioritize the most important goals and create a good plan, New Year’s resolutions can definitely change your life. And it doesn’t necessarily even take very long. If you start learning French on the 1st of January and commit your time to it, you can be conversational by the end of the spring!

It’s good to keep in mind that you don’t always have to be super ambitious. Even small changes can have a huge impact on your life.

The special power of New Year’s resolutions is that they encourage you to take a new start and make this year count!
