Can Goals Change Over Time?
I’m sure you have a lot of goals and some of them you might have had for years. You might even have had the same goal since you were five years old! But can goals change over time? Is it good if they change? Is it better to stick to your goals even when you’re not quite sure about them anymore?
If you have any of these questions, don’t worry, I have the answers. Sometimes it may take a long time to figure out what exactly you want to do or what option makes the most sense. That’s why it’s good to take your time when thinking about what goals to set or whether you should keep working on your old goals.
Can your goals change?
While I encourage you to stick to your goals come hell or high water, it doesn’t mean that you should never change your goals. They might even change on their own without you even noticing.
You might have dreamed of becoming a top CEO, but at some point, you might notice that you are gravitating toward easier positions that fit your skills and personality better. And that’s completely fine!
Goals can definitely change over time and you are free to change them whenever you like. Sometimes you just realize that what once seemed like a great career or lifestyle for you simply doesn’t interest you anymore. That’s perfectly normal and it doesn’t mean that you are weak or don’t have what it takes. It’s best to spend your time on something you know is for you.
Should you change your goals?
If you have had the same big dream for many years and you maybe have even worked really hard for it, the mere thought of giving up on it might sound daunting. I totally get that. But at the same time, you have to think about what you really want from life and whether you still deep down want to continue on your old goals or not.
As time passes, you are bound to change a lot and at the same time, your values and principles change too. What once seemed like the perfect career might now seem boring or too competitive.
Sometimes you simply find something better and then it definitely makes all the sense to spend your time working on your new goal instead of sticking to the old one just because you’ve spent so much time on it already.

When should you stick with your goals?
The most common situation in which one might wonder whether they should keep going or just quit is probably when things aren’t going according to the plan. If you have been working on your goal for a while now and you’re not seeing much (or any) progress, you might feel like it’s best to just give up.
But actually, this is exactly the time when you should stick to your goals. The bigger the goal, the harder it is to reach. That means that running into obstacles is completely normal. And just because you’re not seeing any progress right now doesn’t mean that you couldn’t succeed over time. Don’t quit just because it hasn’t worked out yet.
Another situation where I encourage you to keep going is if you know that reaching your goal would help you in life, even if you’re not very passionate about it. For example, if you know that learning Spanish will probably help you in your career, it’s worth studying even if you’re not all that interested in foreign languages.
Keep in mind that most things in life aren’t guaranteed and increasing your odds is what will help you succeed.
Do people’s goals change with age?
It is completely normal for your goals and plans to change. Research suggests that the goals people have tend to change with age. This is not surprising. Many young people dream of fame and fortune, but a few years later they often start dreaming of having a peaceful, comfortable life instead.
Your goals and dreams reflect your values and what you think you are capable of achieving. That’s why it’s natural that they change over time. It’s always good to ask yourself if your old plans are still valid, so that you are motivated and that you know your hard work matters.
Should goals evolve over time?
It’s great when your goals evolve! That means you have a better idea of what you really want and what makes sense to work for.
You might first dream of being a famous Hollywood actress, but later on, you realize that you’d much rather make a modest living as an actress in smaller productions. That means that your goal has evolved into something that fits your personality and your life better.
Goals naturally evolve over time and it is always good to take a moment to reflect on your life and your goals to make sure that you are going in the right direction.

How often can you change your goals?
The thing about goals is that they tend to take a lot of time and effort. People are often disappointed when they don’t see results right away. It is only those people who stick to their goals and keep going even when they don’t see any immediate results that will see their goals come true.
That’s why you shouldn’t change your goals too often. If you do that, you will never get anywhere.
That being said, if you feel like your old goal is not right for you anymore or you don’t want to put in the effort, feel free to quit that goal and find something new and better to go after.
