Are Goals and Dreams the Same? What’s the Difference?
People often talk about goals and dreams interchangeably. But are goals and dreams basically the same thing? What is the difference between them? What are the actual definitions?
Well, first of all, goals and dreams are not the same thing. The other one is more of a wish, while the other one requires a plan and some motivation. They can both be beneficial to you, but when it comes to changing your life, goals are more important. Let’s find out why.
What is a dream?
Dreams represent our desires and wishes for our future. A dream is something you wish to happen or for you to be. It can be something very far-fetched or ambiguous and you might not even plan to actually make your dreams come true.
Sometimes we simply have dreams because it’s fun to imagine how different life could be. Your dreams don’t have to be realistic and you don’t have to take into account any negative sides it has.
For example, you might dream of being a famous Hollywood actress who lives in a big mansion and can spend millions on whatever you like. You don’t need to worry about job security, the dark sides of fame, or grueling work schedules when this is just a dream for you.
What is a goal?
Goals are different from dreams because goals are actual plans that you intend to reach. They have to be clear and achievable, not ambiguous like dreams. Because goals are plans, they are something you actually work on and possibly sacrifice other things for.
Goals have to be realistic so that it makes sense for you to work for them. This doesn’t mean that your goals couldn’t be big or even crazy, but you have to believe in your chances to achieve them.
While dreams can be anything and they can constantly change, goals need to be clear and tangible. They require focus and perseverance, otherwise it’s not possible to achieve them.
What is a dream without a goal?
A dream without a goal is just a wish. If you want to make your dreams come true, you have to set goals for yourself. They will help you to reach your dreams.
First of all, you have to know what exactly it is that you want. You need to switch your vague dreams to specific goals, that will take you closer to your end goal one step at a time. Then you need to create a detailed plan on how you can achieve your goals.
If you don’t set any goals and simply keep dreaming, your chances of seeing those dreams come true are slim.
Can a goal be a dream?
While goals and dreams are not the same thing, sometimes you can use these words interchangeably. If your ultimate goal in life is to become a successful lawyer, you probably also dream of becoming one.
Dreams aren’t just a waste of time and a sign of lacking direction in life though. They can help you figure out what you want from life. Sometimes you know that you don’t even want your dreams to come true. In this case, dreaming can just be a fun way to explore the possibilities in this world.
What is the difference between a dream, a wish, and a goal?
While your goals are your guidelines in life, dreams can motivate and inspire you to take action. They are free and limitless and you might spend a lot of time thinking about them.
A wish is a specific desire and it’s often something small. It’s not something you have specifically set and planned out, like a goal.
You might for example wish that you lived in a better apartment. This is something that you would like to happen. However, it’s not a dream, if you don’t spend time thinking about it and play with the idea of living in a new, beautiful apartment.
A goal to get a better apartment would again be different from a wish and a dream. If your goal is to find a new apartment, that means you know what kind of an apartment you want, how you are planning to get it, when you are going to look for it, and what kind of actions you will take to find it.
