Do you dream of a better life? Do you sometimes wish you could change yourself just by snapping your fingers? If you want change, you need to get serious about it. And that’s exactly why you should set goals for yourself.

If you’ve never really set any goals, you might feel like they don’t make much of a difference anyway or that they are pointless since up to 70% of people fail at their goals. But what if I told you that that’s mainly because people sometimes choose the wrong goals to set and often do it all wrong when trying to reach them?

Goals do matter. They can completely change your life. Here are seven important reasons why you should set at least one new goal today.

1. Goals help you define what you want in life

Life is full of opportunities and if you’re anything like me, you spend too much time thinking about all the different possibilities in life and imagining what it would be like to live in French Riviera or write a best-selling book series.

Living in your imagination won’t take you far in life though. That’s why you should choose what are the things you want the most in life and then set clear goals for yourself. This helps you to take action and change your life.

If it turns out later on that the goal you set isn’t right for you after all, that is ok. You learned something and gained experience. Now you have a better idea of what kind of goals you should set.

2. Goals give you motivation

Having goals and working on them makes you more motivated. They motivate you to work hard and continuously better your life.

Being a motivated person has many benefits and it can change your perception of life. You no longer need to feel sorry for yourself and think that some things are simply out of your reach. You have a chance to make your dreams come true if you know what you want and work for it.

3. They make you more capable and disciplined

Your goals will also help you learn many different skills that can come in handy. If you for example decide to get volunteer work experience to increase your employability, you might also learn valuable teamwork skills, become more organized, or become a better team leader.

4. Having something to work for makes you happier

People often focus too much on the goal itself and forget to enjoy the journey. But what you might notice if you don’t set any goals or if you give up on them, is that your life feels somehow empty without them.

Goals give your life meaning and they give you an extra reason to get up in the morning. They might annoy or frustrate you sometimes, but every little victory gives you a sense of accomplishment. Working on your goals and seeing progress makes you more content with your life and it makes you feel better about yourself too.

5. Dreams and goals are not the same

Most people have dreams, but not all of them care to turn their dreams into goals. Dreams and goals are not at all the same thing and they have different effects on your life.

While dreams are merely wishes for the future that entertain you during the dull moments, goals are much more serious and they can change not only your future but your day-to-day life too.

If you stick to simply dreaming about a better life, your chances of ever getting it are slim. But if you set goals and work hard on them, your life could change in a matter of months.

6. Setting goals for yourself is a way to level up your life

I know you want to change your life. You want to take it to the next level. But the thing is, that won’t happen without goals.

Those who are serious about leveling up their lives are constantly working on themselves and setting new goals that will help them to get forward in life. Whether you want to start a new career, become rich or popular, become confident, or get new career opportunities, setting goals is the first step.

Leveling up doesn’t happen by accident. You need to know what you are doing and put in the effort. But it’s still all possible for you if you just set those goals and don’t give up.

7. Not having goals keeps you from growing

If you have no goals and nothing to work on, you aren’t really challenging yourself or growing as a person. You can just as well spend your evenings watching reruns on TV since there’s nothing more important to do anyway.

But that inactivity will not get you far. On the other hand, goals can teach you a multitude of new skills that you didn’t even know you would learn. Each goal you have can help you become more hard-working, perseverant, and better at focusing on your task at hand. Useful skills!
