8 Common Reasons You Might Fail Your Goals

You want to change your life, so you have a lot of goals and you have to work hard on them, right? But what if you fail to reach your goals? What if you just can’t seem to make any progress? There are many reasons you may fail your goals and in this post, I will share the most common ones with you.

It’s perfectly normal to have your goals change over time and sometimes that’s simply necessary. There’s no need to stick to some old goals just because you’ve spent time and effort on them. You need to do what is right for you, which sometimes means giving up on your old goals and setting some new ones.

1. You set goals that aren’t right for you

People are easily influenced by others, so naturally, we sometimes set goals and expectations for ourselves that simply aren’t right for us. If you have set goals that aren’t right for you, you might find yourself procrastinating a lot or doing the bare minimum for them.

You might also notice that you often dream about a completely different kind of life or career. Sometimes you simply have a gut feeling that this isn’t for you. There are times when giving up on your goal is the right thing to do, so don’t be afraid to admit it to yourself, if you feel like you’d be better off doing something else.

2. You don’t make your goals as clear as possible

You might fail your goals if you don’t quite know what you’re asking from yourself. To be able to reach your goals, you have to make them as clear and achievable as possible. If your goal is too general, such as “I want to make more money” or “I want to get a better job”, it will be very hard to take any action towards your goal.

If you seriously want a better job, you have to ask yourself what kind of a job you actually want and how you’re going to get it. If you don’t make your goals clear, you might end up looking back and wondering why you haven’t made any progress at all even if it’s been years.

3. You give up too easily

The bigger your goal, the more likely you are to face some big obstacles and even fail from time to time. That’s perfectly fine. Failure is a normal part of success and you shouldn’t be discouraged by that. Making mistakes or not reaching your short-term goals doesn’t mean that you don’t have what it takes. It just means that you have to try again.

If you give up every time things don’t work out as planned, you will reinforce the idea that you’re not good enough (even though you are) and you will have a hard time reaching any goal ever.

4. You don’t put in the effort

One of the most common ways you might fail your goal is by not putting enough effort into it.

If you are dreaming of a great career or more money or a bigger house, you have to work for it. Even if your goal is something relatively simple, like learning conversational Spanish, you still have to put in the effort. You have to work on your goal even when you don’t feel like it.

It’s typical that people who fail to reach their goal say that it just wasn’t for them or that it’s too hard to reach that goal. And while not everyone is necessarily meant to reach the same goals, most of the time people simply don’t try hard enough.

If you want to learn Spanish, you can’t just study 20 minutes a day for a few weeks and then wonder why you haven’t made much progress. Everything worth having requires effort.

5. You’re trying to do too much

If you’re really ambitious and have many different projects going on, you might struggle to find enough time to get everything done. And even if you have enough time to somehow manage to meet deadlines and stay on top of your responsibilities, it might still be hard to be able to focus on your most important goals and get everything done.

No one can do absolutely everything. You always have to prioritize what matters the most. If you have a lot of different goals to work on or your life is otherwise very busy, it might be impossible to find enough time for your goal.

Don’t have too much going on at once. You don’t have to achieve everything this year. Figure out what matters the most for you right now and simply focus on that.

6. You’re afraid to take any risks

Sometimes the only way to get forward is to take risks. If you for example want to start your own business, you might have to quit your job even when you don’t have a guaranteed income. Or maybe you need to take a loan to be able to start your business.

Taking risks is necessary for making big changes in life. That’s why you shouldn’t avoid doing something just because the outcome isn’t guaranteed. And it’s good to keep in mind that not doing anything and settling for a life that isn’t quite what you want is a risk itself.

7. You don’t try anything new

If you have worked hard on your goal and tried your best to make it work, it can be very frustrating to not see much progress. But if that is the case, it’s best to take a look back and ask yourself why you’re not getting any results.

Sometimes your way of doing things simply doesn’t work and what you need to do is try something else. Maybe you’ve tried to attract customers by creating many new products, but what you really should do is work on your social media presence.

Always keep in mind that if you tried something and it didn’t work, it’s time to try something else, not the same thing again.

8. You’re focusing on all the wrong things

People like to keep themselves busy to feel productive. But to really get things done, you have to know what really matters and then just do that. If you spend time on things that don’t make much of a difference to your end goal, you’re just wasting your time and it will be much harder to finally reach your goal.

If you for example want to increase your blog traffic, you have to focus on things like writing blog posts and creating backlinks – not posting on Instagram every day since it won’t bring you any meaningful traffic.
