Do you have a hard time focusing on your goals? Perhaps you have no problem setting them and planning what you will do, but somehow you always get distracted and end up doing something else? If that is the case, don’t worry. I’ll teach you how to focus on your goals.

It takes a lot of hard work to reach your big long-term goals, but the good news is that I have quite a few strategies that you can use to make sure you stay focused and work on those goals. These tips don’t take you much time (in fact they can save you a lot of time) and they are easy to apply to your normal daily life.

The harsh reality is that you are responsible for your own life. And any larger goal you may have can be very difficult to achieve. Goal setting certainly isn’t always easy and some specific goals can feel close to impossible to complete. But what would life be without challenges?

I believe in you and I am sure you can achieve your biggest goal. But to do that, you’d better follow these steps and be disciplined. Your hard work will pay off, but first you have to actually do it.

Why it’s so hard to focus on your goals

First things first. Why is it so hard to stay focused on your goals? We all know that the statistics of how many people keep their New Year’s resolutions are not good. It’s common to decide to change your life today and then forget about it tomorrow.

Most people aren’t exactly masters of time management and they have a hard time staying consistent and disciplined. Fear of failure is also a common reason not to work on your goals.

In a nutshell, people make working on their goals too hard for them. If you have too much going on, you don’t quite know what you should do to reach your goal or what your goal really even is, you’re going to have a very hard time making progress.

So if you are serious about your goals, you have to make them achievable and keep the following tips in mind.

1. Always be clear

One of the most important things to focus on is clarity.

You have to be clear about what your goal is, what steps you need to take to make progress and most of all, what you need to do on a daily basis. The clearer you can be, the better.

If you simply dream of one day having a big house, you’re not really doing anything to make it happen. You need to know where you want to live, what is the price range, what kind of area you want to live in, what kind of house would actually make you happy, and what you are willing to do to be able to afford that house. Money doesn’t fall from heaven, but you can earn it.

When you’re setting a goal, a good way to add some clarity is to make a vision board to figure out what exactly it is that you want to achieve. After that, it’s time to create an action plan.

Sometimes when you’re having a bad day, it helps to take a brisk walk and think about why you set the goal you are working on in the first place. What do you want to achieve? And what are the most important things to complete today?

2. Focus on taking small steps

When you set goals, you likely want to see results fast. But the bigger your goal, the longer it usually takes to reach it. You might find seeing little to no results very discouraging or even feel like giving up on your goal.

This is very common, but you have to keep in mind that it’s normal to not see results when you’re just starting out. Whether you want to make more money or learn a new skill, the beginning tends to be the hardest.

Instead of looking at the bigger picture, focus on taking small steps. Work on your goal for 30 minutes every day and in a couple of months you’ll start seeing some small results. It’s the next step that matters and that’s where your focus should be.

Back in January 2022, I started studying French by myself after taking a couple of French courses at university which I didn’t learn much from. And what do you know, 15 minutes to an hour every day made a big difference in only two months. Suddenly I was able to form simple sentences, my vocabulary was much bigger and it was noticeably easier to understand spoken French. And it took very little effort to get there!

3. Share your goals with others

Sharing your goals with others can make a big difference! I myself joined a 10 000 steps for 10 days challenge and holding each other accountable really helped. In fact, it was an easy goal to achieve.

To make it easier for you to focus on your goals and reach that finish line, share your goals with your friends or family members. You can also look for people with similar goals online and get an accountability partner.

You can progress on your goals faster by surrounding yourself with like-minded people. They help you stay focused and become more ambitious. I’m sure you don’t want to be the only one not getting anything done when you see others doing better and better.

4. Set deadlines

It’s all too easy to come up with a lot of plans and goals and tell yourself that you will get started on them soon. Like tomorrow or next week or maybe next month.

But something always comes up and curiously enough, the goals you set for yourself somehow end up forgotten somewhere in the bottom of your to-do list. And it’s often not because you really had so many more important things to do. People tend to waste a lot of time, whether on social media, procrastinating, or working on things that don’t really even matter.

You can solve this problem by setting deadlines for yourself. Deadlines are stricter than general plans and to-do lists. If you have a deadline coming up, you have to take action.

So, next time you have a feeling you might ignore or forget a goal, set a deadline for completing it. And don’t let yourself forget it.

5. Prioritize what matters the most

No one can do everything, that’s a simple fact. To make actual progress on your goals, you have to know what you need to do to actually get closer to your goal as fast as possible.

For example, if you want to write a book, does it make sense to spend hours thinking about the names and favorite colors of your characters? Or should you perhaps focus on creating a plot outline and get to writing your first draft as soon as possible?

There might also be new skills that you need to learn first or connections to make. Maybe what matters the most right now is to quit your bad habits, whether they include procrastination or being disorganized.

Figure out what matters the most and prioritize it. You only have 24 hours in a day so you need to make them count.

6. Set measurable short-term goals

It’s important that your goals are measurable. If it’s not, you might not be able to tell when you’ve even reached your goal.

Whatever your ultimate goal is, it’s a good idea to break it into monthly goals or even weekly goals, whatever works best in your situation. For example, if you want to have 100k followers on Instagram, you can set a goal to make 12 reels this month or spend an hour creating content every day for a week.

When you set clear targets that you can actually reach, you will find it much easier to make progress, no matter how ambitious your ultimate goal is.

7. Simplify your life

Having too much going on will make your life much harder. The only way you can do everything is if you have only a manageable amount of things to do.

Simplify your life by only focusing on a few things at once. Have a daily schedule that helps you know what you should do and when. Learn to say no both to others and yourself. Don’t waste time on things that don’t matter.

Simplifying your life is an easy way to make faster progress on your goals, but it also helps you be much happier and less stressed.

8. Break big tasks and goals into smaller ones

If you have a big goal, there’s a good chance that you are feeling a little overwhelmed. And that’s normal.

What you need to do, is to break your big goals into smaller goals and big tasks into small tasks. If your goal is to move to New York, you could break that goal into a list of goals that is actually manageable. For example, you need to figure out how high the rents are in New York, what areas you would like to live in, and what areas you want to avoid. You could also start saving up for the security deposit if you don’t have it already.

Once you have broken all those large tasks into smaller ones, you no longer feel overwhelmed because you’ll know what you need to do and each thing on your list is manageable.

9. Use timers regularly

One thing I love to do is to set a timer when I start to work. When you set a timer for half an hour, you want to focus on your work and nothing else because you can see that the time is running fast. I do this on a regular basis, but especially when I don’t really feel like working or when I have too many things on my mind.

The Pomodoro technique is possibly the most popular way to use a timer. You can try that or choose your own minutes.

When you use timers you’ll notice that even if you have a long task list, you still have enough time to do everything because you don’t end up spending time on pointless things that don’t matter. This way you might even be left with some extra time to do something else useful or simply relax after a productive workday.

10. Know what you are afraid of

Fear is one of the biggest reasons why people don’t reach their goals. You might be afraid you will fail or that you’ll look ridiculous in other people’s eyes or that you don’t have what it takes to be the person you want to be.

Whatever your fears are, you need to be aware of them. Take a pen and paper and list all the things that make you feel uneasy about your goal. After that, you can go through the list and come up with solutions for all your fears and potential problems. You’ll notice that most of the things on your list aren’t even that scary or likely to happen. And even if they ever did happen, you can come up with a simple solution or a plan B for all of them.

Once you have done this, it will be much easier to focus on your goal and feel like there is nothing that can stop you.

How to focus on your goals – final thoughts

Whatever particular goal you have in mind, whether you have big career goals, you want to start a new business or you want to get in better shape, the best way to do that is to set goals that are clear, effective, and achievable. You will need to make sure that you know exactly what you are supposed to do and when, and you need to get rid of any distractions around you.

It’s always a good idea to use headphones when you work to block out the background noise and to be able to focus more easily.

At the end of the day, reaching your goals comes down to one thing and that is taking action. Believe in yourself, do great work and you will succeed. The only thing that is standing in the way of the future you dream of, is you. So do yourself a favor and stop holding yourself back. You have what it takes and you can start working on even your biggest and craziest dreams right away.
