Do you feel like monthly goals are an easy and simple way to slowly but surely change your life? I think so too! And that’s exactly what I hope these May goals will help you to do: take a few steps closer to your dream life and feel a bit better about yourself and your life by the end of May.

I recommend you set some new monthly goals every month because they help you get closer to your bigger goals in life and all in all make your life a bit better. Making changes is usually not very easy, but if you can commit to a new habit for 30 days (well, 31 in May), you’re much more likely to stick to it.

And it’s not like you’d absolutely have to do something forever just because you happened to set a goal. Monthly goals also help you figure out whether something really is for you or not – like a certain hobby.

So spend this beautiful month trying new things and learning to stick to your goals.

Why you need to set May goals

May is the last month of spring, which means it’s the perfect month to set a couple of new monthly goals to get more out of life and get ready for summer. Now I’m not talking about having a beach body here (which is a valid goal too if that’s what you want) but making sure that your summer is going to be more fun.

You might have a lot of plans for summer. Perhaps you are going traveling and you’re not going to have a lot of time for goals when you’re touring around Italy and southern France. Or maybe you are going to be busy with work and spending your evenings at the pool.

Either way, this month is the perfect time for some carefully chosen May goals. They will help you learn new skills and feel better about life.

1. Read 4 self-help books

Self-help books are a great way to work on your personal growth and change some aspects of your life. This month, set a goal to read one new self-help book per week. This helps you learn a lot but also read more, which is always a bonus.

The one self-help book I always like to recommend is Atomic Habits by James Clear. It’s seriously amazing! Other self-help books you can pick are Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey.

When picking the books to read this month, keep in mind that self-help books only work if you take them seriously and actually take action.

2. Start Pilates

Exercise is always a good idea, especially if it’s something you can easily do at home. If you have been thinking about exercising a bit more, set a goal to do Pilates every day this month.

Pilates is a wonderful choice because you don’t need any equipment for it, it’s relatively easy and it’s good for beginners too. You can start with 10-minute workouts if you want. At the end of the month, you will for sure feel better and be a bit more fit too.

Get started by looking for a few Pilates workouts on Youtube. You can create a playlist for yourself so that you can simply choose the next video on the list every day, which makes it easier to stick to your goal.

3. Update your wardrobe

Do you ever feel like your clothes are boring? Do you wish you could feel more like yourself in your clothes? In that case, it might be time to update your wardrobe a little.

You don’t even have to make any big purchases: simply getting a few new pieces that you really like and letting go of some of the clothes that you haven’t worn in ages can make a difference.

It’s definitely worth it to invest in good clothes: the clothes you wear affect how you feel and they are a message to other people too.

4. Get back to an old hobby

Did you use to play baseball in high school or were you perhaps an avid dancer back in the day? Try getting back to an old hobby this month and see if it’s something you’d still love to do.

Hobbies make your life more fun and sports are always good for you. You don’t even have to focus on becoming better or advancing to the next level – simply do it because you enjoy it.

You could also think about what kinds of books you used to love. If you read a lot of mystery books as a teenager, maybe you should give them another chance.

5. Make 4 new friends

This might sound like a crazy goal, but it never hurts to go out and try to make some new friends. Lots of people say they wish they had more friends or that they had more really close friends.

In other words, people definitely want to meet you and become friends. You just need to find them and make the effort to form a relationship with them. And online friends are good too.

If you happen to live in a big city, look for events or Facebook groups that are aimed at women who have just moved to the city. They are always ready to meet new people and discover what the city has to offer!

6. Take an online photography course

If you wish you could take better pictures for Instagram or that your photo albums looked a bit better, why not learn a few photography tips and tricks?

There are plenty of helpful photography courses online and Youtube is full of useful videos. And of course – nothing makes you perfect like practice does. Take some time this month to take at least one online course on how to take better pictures and then practice like there’s no tomorrow.

7. Learn to prioritize

Prioritizing is one of the most important skills you can have if you ask me. We all have way too many things to do and we wish we could do 500 more. But given that there are only 24 hours in a day, it’s not possible to do it all. And that’s why you need to prioritize.

Learning to focus on what matters the most helps you be more efficient, get the important things done faster, and spend more time on things that you actually love.

To get started, read this post about why prioritization is so important first. Then, think about what you can do to start prioritizing what really matters and how you can allocate more time to those things.

8. Journal every morning

Journaling is a super easy and simple way to organize your thoughts and get things off your chest. You don’t even need to spend much time on this if you don’t want to.

Simply scribble down what is on your mind right now and don’t think about what is too trivial to write down or whether your writing sounds good. Just write without any pressure. You can’t do it wrong.

Final thoughts on setting May goals

Setting monthly goals is something I believe everyone should do. It’s not a big commitment, but it can change your life. And many goals, like getting back to an old hobby, are a lot of fun, so they really don’t have to be all that difficult either.

That being said, it’s definitely a good idea to set some not-so-pleasant monthly goals too because they are the ones that will really help you reach your dreams.

Learning to prioritize isn’t necessarily all that much fun, but it’s not really even supposed to be. What that goal is supposed to do is help you become more efficient and get you closer to reaching your ultimate goals. That’s definitely worth doing, even if it doesn’t make you happier right away. It will, later on.
